In the past year I've noticed a very strange and…disturbing trend in all the major comic shared "universes." They are all…and I do mean all…undergoing some form of a partial reboot, complete reboot, or re-imagining brought on by the actions of some super-powerful character who suddenly develops the ability to completely reshape reality and then proceeds to do so. Let's take a look, shall we?
First let's look at the person who started the entire hoopla; Wanda Maximoff a.k.a Scarlet Witch.
Wanda apparently has been insane for the past couple of years of Marvel Continuity and during this time has managed to not only kill off Agatha Harkness, but also Hawkeye and been indirectly responsible for the deaths of Jack of Hearts and the Ant-Man. And well…also that little bit where she managed to completely change the Marvel Universe into a world right out of What If… Oh yeah, and the whole "No More Mutants" although apparently being all-powerful means you don't need to know basic math as she missed somewhere in the area of 198 mutants or something. And she did it all with the help of her VAGINA OF DOOM!!! (Sorry…couldn't resist)
Basically Marvel used the Witch to bring it's mutant population down to a more manageable level. Not exactly continuity altering on the scale of the other two…but for Marvel it's a pretty big deal.
Moving on, we have the person who we all grew to detest this past summer. That's right, Superboy Prime!
Now I never much liked Prime as he struck me as too whiny in his few appearance pre- and during Crisis on Infinite Earths. Apparently Geoff Johns thought he wasn't whiny enough, and gave us a character whose only real claim to fame is being a walking, talking tantrum. Now this character is a real prize. Atleast Wanda had some prior claim to reality manipulation. This character altered reality, or "caused rifts" by…Punching! That's right, Superboy Prime apparently has the power to PUNCH! out reality and all it's aspects, being singlehandedly responsible for Hawkman, Donna Troy, Jason Todd, and the Legion of Super-Heroes to name a few. DC takes the prize for "Most Stupid Character Rejuvenation For The Sake Of A Crossover." Anyway, you get the idea…yet another character used for the sake of reality manipulation. Next up…the latest in the line-up, Void.
At the conclusion of Captain Atom: Armageddon, Void apparently 'fixes' Cap, sends him back to the DCU Proper, and takes his 'flaw' into herself. She then proceeds to wipe away all miscellaneous continuity, leaving the way clean for reboots across the entire line for the new creators who are taking over the books later on in the year. While admittedly this is the only one that actually serves a real purpose, the conception was so long, and stupid that I cannot get over that. The series had a promising start but quickly devolved into one cliche after another resulting finally in a universe-reboot. I'm sure some people loved it, but it just wasn't for me, and I think the same goal could've been achieved in a much more effective manner. Say, by actually focusing on the WSU characters rather than using a DCU character to 'peek' in at them.
So, there you have it. Three different universes. Three different characters. Three different reality manipulations. All within the span of 1 year. I'm sure this means something, but damned if I'm smart enough to figure it out. If anyone has any clue what this could refer to, let me know. If we're due for a reality alteration I'd like to be prepared…
